Christians, when I think about telling others about the true depths of God, I find myself likening it to exploring the ocean depths. I remember the time I was in Hawaii on spring break. I took a scuba diving class that was in the hotel pool. They got us familiar with the equipment, how it functioned in a safe, controlled environment. Later that afternoon they were going to take us out to the ocean. Unfortunately due to circumstance beyond my control, I was unable to make the afternoon dive, but I remembered the lesson.
Like Christianity, God wants to start us off exploring Him in a safe, controlled environment. He starts us off in the shallow end of the pool and gradually prepares us for the deep end. All in the safety and security of His will. It looks different for everyone. If you grow up in the Church, the shallow end could be your Sunday school class, and the deep end your senior high youth group. If you came to the Lord later in life, He gives you a safe and secure spiritual place to learn the basics. How to pray, read the Word, hear His voice guiding you all the way. It is all preparation for the “Ocean”.
The one thing you must understand about God; when He takes you to the “Ocean Depths” of Him, there is no end. Imagine a professional diver, starting at the age of 18, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for them to explore every inch of every ocean, top to bottom, in their lifetime. God is SO much bigger than that. So when are we ever “done” exploring God’s character as Christians? When do we say, we have seen it all, or have seen enough? Is there a time to hang up the mask and fins and call it quits? Never! What should we do, go back to the pool? Leave the pool? Start exploring the Land? (The Land can represent the things of this World). No…
As Christians, we signed up, traded our life on land, where you can easily navigate, see all that is around you, for a life in the ocean of God’s majesty. Where daily we require Him to guide us, show us, lead us, supply the very breath we need. As we start on this side of eternity, exploring His great depths, there are many challenges in the ocean. Through His guidance and protection we can work through any new challenges we face.
God has all the proper equipment for us, available right when we need it. God will take us to new locations, new areas, new depths. Sometimes He plunges us into those new depths and it may feel uncertain, a little scary, or you may become fearful that you’re ill-prepared. Take heart, whenever you feel like you are in over your head with God, He is taking you to new depths, to show you more of Him! It is nothing but His love and preparation for spending eternity with Him, in Jesus name, Amen.
That is what the Scriptures mean when they say,“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. I Corinthians 2:9-10 (NASB)
Can you find out the deep things of God, or can you by searching find out the limits of the Almighty [explore His depths, ascend to His heights, extend to His breadths, and comprehend His infinite perfections]? Job 11:7 (AMP)
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways. Romans 11:33 (NASB)
