Obey God-Even When You Don’t Know Why

Christians, I want to share with you about a pair of jeans I once bought. God was highly involved.  He did it specifically to show me why obedience was so important.

At a retailer, I had been watching these specific jeans on clearance.  They had one pair in my size and style.  They were slowly coming down in price and I was waiting patiently, my wife even found an online coupon for $3.00 off.  We kept going back and finally the price hit the 70% off mark.  We know that it’s about the lowest they will go: $6.88 for the jeans and with my coupon $3.00 off, making my pair of jeans $3.88!

I looked through the rack that day, but the pair I was watching – GONE! No! I thought, God was saving those for me.  Saddened, I looked around for them.  I’m a 32 X 34, a rare size to find on clearance (if you don’t know God).  I saw a pair on the rack that was 32 x 32.  Very close, could I make them work?  I have bought this size before at other stores and always returned them.  They fit around the waist, but they look like I am on the fence about a flood, if you know what I mean.  I thought if I couldn’t have “MY” pair of jeans, maybe I could get “a” pair of jeans.

I had tried this pair on, tried to sell my wife on why they would work.  Then I went back to the fitting room and consulted God.  I felt the Holy Spirit say “No”…not the answer I wanted to hear, but I remembered an earlier time when I received a “No” and it all worked out. Romans 8:28 says it too.  So I thought ok.  I went into the changing room saying “Yes”, I came out and told my wife “No”.  We left empty handed.

We went to this retailer weekly to browse clearance and the next week, while there, I looked.  Maybe someone had returned one, maybe it was misplaced – Nope.

Another week, my wife and I went back, she had coupons for women’s clothes, I was helping her look.  God’s good, she found good buys.  I said I was going to men’s clearance, I looked around, nothing again.  I was thinking, “God still hasn’t turned this for my good”.

I walked across the aisle and looked on another rack full of shorts.  I saw a couple pairs of jeans and in the front of those jeans were MY JEANS!  My size, my style, my price, the ones I had been patiently waiting for, I was in disbelief.  I picked them up, I re-read the label again to make sure.  At that moment, I was overwhelmed, but not by having a pair of jeans, but because I felt like I received a huge hug from heaven and God saying “I love you son, and I love your obedience.”  I took them over to my wife, I was almost in tears, smiling ear to ear.

God loves us so much, He has the perfect plan, sometimes we just have to wait and trust.  God could have allowed my jeans to always be there, but He wanted to test me, to test my obedience.  He loves me just that much, and He loves you that much too.  His word says that He works things out for Good, all things for good. His words are true, even in the smallest most mundane things like jeans for $3.88. Most importantly, His words are true to the biggest events in our lives. Nothing feels better than obeying God, waiting on Him, and in His timing, watching Him work out everything perfectly for His glory!  Thanks God!  In Jesus name, Amen.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)

If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever–the Spirit of truth.  John 14:15-17 (NIV)

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’   For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.   But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Matthew 6:28-33 (NIV)
