Faith: Our Flashlight in the Dark

Christians, imagine a pitch black room, dark as a moonless night.  You are standing in the middle of the room, frozen. You know there is a way out, but you cannot see it.  You cannot begin to imagine where it is. IF you had a source of light, like a flashlight, you would feel so much more confident and secure.  You could shine it around and get small glimpses of what the room looks like. If you could see portions of the room, then you could locate the direction you should be headed, and make decisions based on what the flashlight is allowing you to see.  The flashlight is like our faith.

When God puts us in circumstances or situations, it is like being put in that dark room. We know God puts us there, we know there is a way out, but we cannot see it.  We need something to direct us, guide us in our circumstances. Since we are Christians, we use faith. Our faith in God allows us to see some aspects, some things around the situation.  Our faith helps us get a glimpse of what God is doing. He is strategic in what He allows us to see, what is going on, and what He is up to. We often tend to think that when God puts us in the room, it would be easier for Him and way easier for us, if He just turned on a bright light.  Then we wouldn’t need a flashlight, we wouldn’t need faith. We could see the whole room, what everything looks like, get the whole picture, and see our exit out. No, God earnestly desires for us to grow and mature and that requires perseverance and we get perseverance via Hope and Faith.  It is all apart of God’s bigger picture.

God desires intimacy and a personal relationship with Him and for us to learn about His vastness.  If we had everything we ever needed and wanted, never faced any difficulties or hardships, and never got into a situation we couldn’t see the way out, then why would we ever need to have any sort of relationship with God.  He loves us so much that He intentionally puts us through all sorts of test, trials, hardships, situations, and circumstances. We must use our faith, trust in His goodness, and wait upon the Lord. The next time spiritually you find yourself in ‘the dark room trial’, turn your faith on and see what God has in store for you.

Father God, we thank you for your love and care for us.  We thank you that you are always beside us in every test and trial.  We thank you for the faith we have, and the perseverance you are growing in us, that leads to maturity in You.  We pray for wisdom and guidance, in Jesus name, Amen

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

The whole chapter of Hebrews 11 is about faith, I would recommend reading it out to see the examples, and if the Lord leads you, take each one of the examples and find their story in the Old Testament, to see how God lead and directed them for His will and purpose.

For we live by faith, not by sight.  II Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish it’s work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 (NIV)

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.  Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:1-5 (NIV)
