Special Anniversary Edition: Forging a Sword

ourwedding-9

Christians, many years ago God was giving me a revelation about marriage and how it is like forging a sword.  He showed me the idea of the metal being heated together, pounded out, shaped, smoothed, and sharpened and polished.  I was telling my wife about these attributes and we were discussing how they fit into our lives. We talked about what we saw God doing in our lives and we also talked about His plan and purpose for the process.  In His amazing timing, this all took place on our 3 year anniversary. I wrote most of this revelation down at the time, but as today is our 10 year Anniversary, I feel like I have a little better perspective and we are further along in the process.

We first saw how God was working on us, individually, before we got married.  He was preparing us for His process of bringing us together and melding us as one.  Once He brought us together, we realized it was His perfect plan to take two completely different ‘metals’ and to show us how He can make us one. After we talked about this, I just went online and searched the internet for “Sword Making”. I found a video on-line about the ancient art of Japanese Katana making. It was really fun to hear the narrator describing the process and remembering our discussion.  It was God edifying what He was showing us.

There was one scene where the swordsmith fits one glowing red piece of metal into the other: iron into steel.  I truly see this is when we got married, we united together. You see what gives the Katana its strength is the blending of two different metals, with two distinctive sets of properties.  The result is for strength that neither one of the metals could achieve alone. I see my wife as the steel, and I see myself as the iron (which we laughed about at the time because my wife was told in a doctor’s appointment years before we married, that she was iron deficient, but she is not anymore!)  Iron alone, would not make a good sword because it is too weak on its own. Steel also on its own, although strong and sharp, without some softness could break. We see that statement as God saying, I was needed in her life, and I can see that she was needed in mine. She is sharp, strong, to the point, she is the cutting edge of the Katana. I am the center of the blade, which provides enough give so that we do not chip or break when used in battle. We are two completely different people with two completely different backgrounds who have been united as one and forged with incomparable strength in the Lord.

Once the two metals were together, they were repeatedly brought to a glowing hot point and then hammered upon to blend and shape.  Tests and trials. God’s forge is life and His “hammer” is various tests and trials.  Anytime we felt that the intensity of our situation was “hot”  we could see God getting us ready for some shaping. The tests and trials He put us through were not “fun” by any means at the time, but they were necessary to make us, mold us, and shape us into the married couple we are today.  The final step was heating the finished blade up to a super high heat, then plunging it into water. The blade’s then set, but it is not done. This is where the polishing process begins.

Polishing is a long, slow, process of rubbing the sword against an abrasive stone at different levels of intensity until you achieve the sharp edge you desire and bring out the beauty in the side of the blade.  We have felt that God has also put us through many different situations, circumstances, used different places and people to help work on making us sharp. God wants us to achieve a status where we are “to the point” with our intentionality and beliefs.  He also wants us to shine as examples of a Christ-centered marriages on this earth. I truly believe we are still in this sharpening stage and God is getting ready to move us onto the next stage: being used in battle. God wants Christian marriages forged strong and unbreakable.  The enemy has so many weapons to bring against us in today’s age, but if we rely on the processes God has taken us through, we can defeat them all.

As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary today, we looked back at the process we went through, and it truly was an amazing and difficult process.  However, as our lives begin to take shape and God begins to move us from forging, polishing and sharpening to battle use.  We can look back on such a difficult forging process and feel good because we can see that through all the fire, pounding, and pain, that God has forged such a strength and unity in our lives and marriage.  That the forces of hell cannot come against, Hallelujah, In Jesus Name, Amen.

But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female.  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.  So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.  Mark 10:6-9 (NIV)

Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.  Colossians 3:14 (NASB)

Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.  Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. James 1:2-3 (AMP)

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also if two lie down together, they will keep warm. but how can one keep warm alone?  Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)
